How long to go to Guadalajara for, from New York

4h 55m in the air, 2,205 miles. A two-night trip loses most of two days to travel; three or four nights is where this one starts to make sense.

Guadalajara is 4,998 ft higher than New York, at 5,016 ft. Enough that a first-day hike or a hard workout will feel harder than it does at home, and enough that alcohol goes further.

Guadalajara is the capital of the central state of Jalisco in Mexico, and the second-largest city in the country, with about a million and a half citizens in the core city and about 5.2 million in the metropolitan area. It is considered a colonial city, though much of its architecture dates from the independence period. Although it has a far more relaxed feel than Mexico City, the city center can still seem a bit stuffy and dusty, especially during rush hour when the sun is out. All in all, however, it is a lovely city and contains many nice areas for walking, not just in the center.
